Women's Palace Guard

This fragment consists of two very incomplete scenes, surmounted by a frieze with redents and separated by a column placed in a frame. The scene on the right shows the foliage of a tree. On the left is the gate of a rampart, topped by merlons. In front of the gate stands a Yavanī, dressed in the Iranian fashion: long tunic and trousers tucked into boots. She is armed with a spear and a short sword. Behind her, in the doorway, the silhouette of another figure can be seen. The presence of the Yavana, guardians of the princess Yaśodharā, most often evokes the episode of the Sleep of the Women.

The schist reliefs discovered by Barthoux between 1926 and 1928 are mostly from the vicinity of the Great Stūpa K1 of Tapa-i Kafarihā, the south-western part of the main stūpa B12 of Bāgh Gaï (around B13) and the Great Stūpa TK140 of Tapa Kalān.
