Head of Buddha

The ūrṇā of this Buddha appears to have been torn off, unless it has been painted: the low quality of the reproduction does not make this clear. The uṣnīṣa is figured in a voluminous wavy bun, a treatment found on the rest of the hair. The undulations consist of waves of raised strands. The profile is of Western inspiration: the arch of the eyebrow is straight, the nose aquiline, the mouth hemmed. With half-closed eyes, this delicately executed Buddha seems to be withdrawn in meditation.
